Teaching and Community Projects

Teaching
I have taught archaeology at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and I have directed University field schools for the Universities of Durham and Exeter. I enjoy teaching and doing workshops in Primary and Secondary schools, inspiring the next generation of archaeologists.

Community outreach and projects
I have run many community projects, most notably the Gunwalloe Project, funded by the National Trust in Cornwall as part of the Unlocking our Coastal Heritage Project. The two seasons of excavation involved university students and members of the local community; the report is available on the publications page.
I am very experienced in public engagement and dissemination and really enjoy opening peoples eyes to the things we can learn from artefacts. My years on the committees of local and national archaeological societies has enabled an understanding of how these groups can contribute and support research.
I can present the results of my analysis and sites at open days or lectures as required. I particularly enjoy finds surgeries which are the equivalent of antiques roads show except that everything is broken and found in the garden! I have done these events for Dartmoor National Park and several projects in Cornwall.
I have been involved in many media projects, most recently "Cornish Life Stories - Gabbroic Pottery" by Awen Productions, and a film for the South West Implement Petrology Group for their website.
This video was made by Barbara Santi of Awen Productions for the Helston Museum of Cornish Life. The purpose is to highlight the story of Gabbroic pottery and it clay source which has intrigued people for decades and was the topic of my PhD. A link to my Thesis is on the publications page.
This is a video by Richard Tomlinson for the South West Implement Petrology Group. As a committee member I was asked to be filmed to explain the role of petrology and how thin sections are used in provenancing Stone Age stone implements. Although I do not carry out analyses for the Group my work also includes the analysis of stone thin sections.
