Imogen Wood

I am passionate about archaeology and I have wanted be an archaeologist since I was eight years old, a dream which I have been lucky enough to achieve as an adult. I have never lost that enthusiasm and find my work fulfilling. I still get excited opening the next box of pottery because every assemblage is unique and challenging, and you never know what you are going to discover next. I am based in Exeter in the South West and I have my own self contained lab at home, invaluable for separating my work life from my role as a mother of three.

Qualifications

I am a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and a registered CIfA ceramic specialist for the South West with the appropriate training and qualifications required under current CIfA guidance. I am currently on the CIfA Finds Group committee. I hold a Doctorate (2011) and Masters Degree (2007) from the University of Exeter and BA from Durham (2004).

I have worked in this region for over 25 years. This has given me a well-rounded understanding of the relevant regional and national research goals, as well as ongoing work into ceramics studies in the area.

I worked in the commercial archaeology sector for five years, firstly as a field archaeologist and later as a finds officer. This has given me a practical understanding of the excavation and post-excavation process.

My PhD focused on ceramic petrography and pottery across the South West of England and further developed the remit of my expertise both in regional pottery types and in petrographic analytical techniques. I was awarded a 6 month CIfA sponsored apprenticeship with Dr. Roger Taylor, a leading regional geologist and consultant petrologist in the South West and have retained his continued support. I have the skills base needed to offer a comprehensive ceramic and petrographic consultancy service. The academic and interpretive skills required to achieve a Doctorate have provided me with the invaluable ability to produce concise and professional written work to a high standard for any level of publication.
